we are happy to announce that in cooperation with Max Mueller Bhavan (Goethe Institute) a selection of our programme will go on tour in India!
Indo-German filmmaker Krishna Saraswati will be on tour to show his award winning first feature-length documentary “The Legend of Shiva and Parvati”. And Tina Lange, co-director and South Asian programmer of the festival, will present a selection of Shorts.

11th – 17th October 2009 Kino Arsenal, Potsdamer Platz, Berlin
The AWFF welcomes film and video works directed, written, shot, edited and produced by Asian women. They are looking for works which question and challenge rules of normalcy regarding gender and ethnicity. The 2009 program will be divided into five sections: New Currents, Asian-Diaspora, Short Films, Experimental and Documentary.
The submission deadline is June 30th 2009. They do not set any restrictions on length, genre, and production year.

JAY (2008 Philippines, Dir.: Francis Xavier Pasion, 95 min)
JAY ist die Geschichte des brutalen Mordes an einem schwulen Lehrer und die Hintergründe dieses Falls. Ebenso böse wie komische beschreibt diese schwarze Satire die korrumpierenden und manipulativen Mechanismen der Massenmedien. Gleichzeitig wird erkennbar, wie für ein Publikum, das nach verrückter Unterhaltung giert, tagtäglich die Dritte Welt als Show und Spektakel inszeniert wird. Was ist Realität? Wie wird sie geschaffen? Und in wessen Interesse?

SALAWATI (2008, Singapore, Dir.: Marc X Grigoroff, 82 min)
Durch den tragischen Tod ihres Bruders, wird die Familie eines 12-jährigen malaiischen Mädchens in ihren Grundfesten erschüttert. Im Verlauf des Films fügt sich allmählich die wahre Geschichte des Badeunfalls zusammen und offenbart Überraschendes. Bewegend und überzeugend vielschichtig erzählt, stellt „Salawati“ die großen Fragen nach Wahrheit und Gerechtigkeit, nach Leben und Tod, und hinterfragt so kulturelle Stereotypen.

INVISIBLE CHILDREN (2008, Singapur, Dir.: Brian Gothong Tan, 85 min)
In einfühlsam erzählten und intelligent verwobenen Episoden des Alltäglichen zeichnet „Invisible Children“ ein schmerzlich humorvolles Portrait des Privaten, des Arbeits- und Familienlebens im gegenwärtigen Singapur. Dabei gelingt es Brian Tan in seinem Debütfilm mit starken Bildern und einem Hang zum Subversiven, manches Untergründige einer auf Effizienz ausgerichteten Gesellschaft sichtbar zu machen.

DIE LEGENDE VON SHIVA AND PARVATI (Germany / India 2008, Dir.: Krishna Saraswati, 85 min)
Auf den Spuren der indischen Götterlegende von Shiva und Parvati erzählt der Film die wahre Geschichte einer großen Liebe, die uns von einer deutschen Kleinstadt in die wilde Bergwelt des Himalaja führt. Abseits der hippiebevölkerten Sandstrände trifft dort eine deutsche Frau auf einen indischen Asketen und verliebt sich in ihn. 30 Jahre später begibt sich der Sohn der beiden auf Spurensuche. Eine Lebensgeschichte, die weit mehr ist als ein exotisches Porträt.

…am Sonntag dem 18.01. im Saal 1 des Babylon Mitte. Verliehen werden der Manfred Durniok Award und der Green Chilies Award.
Davor und danach gibt es aber nochmal jedem Menge Filme zu sehen, zum Beispiel “Daytime Drinking” aus Korea, beginnt um 19.30 im Babylon Mitte. Im selben Kino erwarten sie noch andere Juwelen des asiatischen Independent-Kinos, wie “Captain Tokio” des japanischen Filmemachers Watanabe Kazushi (21 Uhr) oder “The 8th Day”, einem gefilmten Traum zwischen Wahnsinn und Realität, aus Thailand (21.30 Uhr).
Auch das Programm im Z-inema läßt sich sehen und wird diesmal von Pakistan bestimmt. “Zinda Laash” aus dem Jahre 1967, ein einzigartiger Vampirfilm, wartet ab 21.30 Uhr auf gespannte Besucher.

The Awards Ceremony for the Manfred Durniok Award and the Green Chilies Award will take place on Sunday the 18th of January at 8 pm, Screen 1 of the Cinema Babylon Mitte.
Before and after that there will be more Asian Independent Films, like “Daytime Drinking” from Corea, starting at 7.30 pm at the Babylon Mitte. At the same Cinema there are a lot of other Cine-Jewels waiting for you. “Captain Tokio” by japanese Filmmaker Watanabe Kazushi (9 pm) or “The 8th Day”, a film from Thailand between madness and reality (9.30 pm).
The Programme at the Z-inema is of course also worth a look. “Zinda Laash”, a unique Vampire-Film from 1967 is screened there at 9.30 pm.
Samstag ist Kinotag und so gibt es am Samstag dem 17.01. im Kino Babylon Mitte ab 15 Uhr wieder jede Menge Highlights des asiatischen Independent-Kinos zu erleben. Die japanisch/französische Coproduktion “Vermillion Souls” des Regisseurs und Tänzers Iwana Masaki (20 Uhr, Babylon Mitte) bewirbt sich um den Green Chilies Award, über den das Publikum entscheidet, ebenso “Invisible Children” von Brian Gothong Tan aus Singapur (20 Uhr, Babylon Mitte). Die Shorts Competition 3 wird ab 22 Uhr im Saal 2 gezeigt. “Queer Shorts” (18 Uhr, Babylon Mitte) & eine Retrospektive des 8 mm Films aus Japan (16 Uhr, Babylon Mitte), für jeden wird etwas dabei sein.
Wer von den Filmemachern direkt lernen möchte sollte auch unseren zweiten Panel besuchen, er wird um 19.30 im Oval im Babylon Mitte (Treppe hoch) stattfinden und das Thema heißt diesmal: “Censorship in Asia”.
Und da ja Samstag ist, heißt das nicht nur Kino- sondern auch Party-Zeit.
Thee 50’s High Teens sind extra aus Tokyo angereist um mit Asian Hot Shots Berlin 2009 ordentlich Party zu machen. Am Samstag Abend um 22 Uhr findet ihr Konzert im Grünen Salon statt und danach kann man sich bei DJ Commander Schmackos aus Berlin zu den Klängen der wilden 60’s verausgaben.

Thee 50’s High Teens came directly from Tokyo to play an awsome concert at the Grüner Salon just around the corner of the Babylon Mitte Cinema. The Show will start at 10 pm and afterward DJ Commander Schmackos will make you dance to the wild 60’s Music.

Am Freitag dem 16.01. geht es weiter mit den Anwärtern für den Green Chilies Award, der Nachfolger der “Shorts Competition 1″ (lief am Donnerstag), die “Shorts Competition 2″, wird wieder ab 22 Uhr im Babylon Mitte zu sehen sein.
Weitere Anwärter auf die Stimmen des Publikums und damit vielleicht bald schon Gewinner des Awards, sind “Tropical Manila” aus Korea (20 Uhr Babylon Mitte, Saal 2) und, seine deutsche Premiere feiernd: “They Call Me Monkey!” von der indonesischen Schriftstellerin, Schauspielerin & Regisseurin Djenar Maesa Ayu (20 Uhr Babylon Mitte, Saal 1).
