2nd ASIAN HOT SHOTS BERLIN: January 13 – 18, 2009

Celebrating its 2nd season ASIAN HOT SHOTS BERLIN is a platform for independent Asian film makers to introduce themselves and their films in Germany/Europe, and to trigger off an interaction with their German/European counterparts.

The element of promoting human relations and inter-cultural dialogue, imbibed in the spirit of the festival, should enjoy the same aesthetic value as that of the promotion of Asian films and their makers.

The program features a diverse selection of Asian films from feature, documentaries to animation and experimental work with an invitation to participate in post-screening discussions with the audience and filmmakers.

Der Deutsch-Indische Filmclub lädt ein: Asian Hot Shorts

*Mittwoch/Wednesday 11. Juni, 20h: INDIAN HOT SHORTS*

*90 min, Original with engl. subtitles, selection of shorts films from the festival asian hot shots berlin *

In January 2008 the *asian hot shots berlin – festival for film and video art* presented a wide selection of independent films from Asia inculding the South Asian region. This programm will show a selection of Indian shorts films screened at the festival, introduction and further information will be given by one of the organisers. The themes of the films range from a Baseball match with Gandhi to a short documentary about a workshop with Nomadic children, you can also have a look into two different versions of the daily life of a taxi driver in Bombay.

Asian Hot Shots Vol. 1 - DVD und Buch

Indian director Ritwik Ghatak (who died in poverty in 1976) creates a dramatic tale of a struggle to survive around Ishwar, a young man, and Sita, his sister who live in a refugee camp together with Abiram, an orphan. Years later, Abhiram and Sita elope to Calcutta as Ishwar opposes their marriage. When Abhiram dies in an accident, Sita is forced into prostitution. Meanwhile, Ishwar contemplates suicide but is disuaded from doing so by his friend Harprasad who persuades him to sample the life in Calcutta, culminating in a visit to a brothel. The devastated Sita discovers that her client is her brother and kills herself. At the end of the film, an aged Ishwar takes Sita‘s son by the hand to a new home by the river.

Das wechselvolle Schicksal eines Bengalen, der nach der gewaltsamen Teilung seines Landes 1948 wie viele andere seiner Landsleute nach Kalkutta flüchtet. Im Indien vor der Unabhängigkeit beginnt sich eine zarte Liebe zwischen dem 11-jährigen Ravi (Sikandar Agarwal) und der kleinen Masha anzubahnen. Der selbstbewusste und zielstrebige Junge weiß eines ganz genau: Eines Tages wird er seinen Knochenjob in der Teppichfabrik hinter sich lassen und ein freier Mann sein. Als der Geschäftsführer Masha an einen Mädchenhändler verhökern will, trifft Ravi eine schwerwiegende Entscheidung: Statt sich selbst kauft er seine Freundin frei und schickt sie mit wenig Geld nach Kalkutta. Zuflucht findet sie bei einer strengen Bordellbesitzerin, bei der sie als erotische Tänzerin Karriere macht. Über Jahre hinweg hält sie treu ihren mit Ravi verabredeten Pakt ein, bei jedem Vollmond den größten Shiva-Tempel der Stadt zu besuchen, um sich dort wieder vereinen zu können. Durch seltsame Fügungen des Schicksals treffen sie wiederum Jahre später erneut aufeinander…

asian hot shots wird bereits vom 24.1.-29.1.2008 auf Tour gehen.

Die erste Station ist das Kino die naTo (Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 46) in Leipzig. Gemeinsam mit der Cinémathèque Leipzig e.V. hat green chilies e.V. ein Programm mit Schwerpunkt China zusammengestellt. Weitere Informationen und Tickets gibt es unter www.nato-leipzig.de.

Das Programm im Babylon Mitte ist abgelaufen, im Z-inema geht es aber noch an zwei Abenden mit asiatischen Klassikern des Exploitation Kinos weiter. Wer Ungewöhnliches sehen will, sollte sich heute und Sonntag nicht entgehen lassen.
