Edwin ist seit Beginn des ASIAN HOT SHOTS BERLIN mit seinen Kurzfilmen und seinem ersten Langfilm präsent und populär gewesen. Wir freuen uns sehr, dass sein neuer Film »Kebun binatang« (Postcards From The Zoo) nun auch tatsächlich zum Berlinale Wettbewerb eingeladen wurde.

Aus diesem Anlass zeigt das Asian Hot Shots Berlin sein komplettes bisheriges Werk im Kino Moviemento – Kottbusser Damm 22 – bestehend aus seinem Debüt »Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly« und all seinen Kurzfilmen.

Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly / Babi Buta Yang Ingin Terbang

In diesem kryptisch anmutenden Film wollen alle jemand anderes oder woanders sein. Es geht um alte Wunden, Stereotypisierung, Stigmata, Ausgrenzung, Negierung der eigenen Identität, Wunsch nach Zugehörigkeit – Themen und Aspekte, die nur selten im Zusammenhang mit der chinesischen Minderheit öffentlich in Indonesien diskutiert wurden aber noch immer stark deren Leben beeinflussen. Eine fragile, aber weitreichende Sich auf eine Community, die es sich selbst nicht leicht macht – und Hoffnungen, die nie wirklich erfüllt werden können.
In this cryptic movie all want to be someone else or somewhere else. It’s about old wounds, stereotyping, stigma, exclusion, denial of identity, and belonging – themes and issues that were hardly discussed in regard to the Chinese minority in Indonesia, but still strongly affect their lives. A fragile but panoramic vision of a community that is not at ease with itself – and hopes that can never be truly fulfilled.

Der Film handelt von Gefühlen über Individualität und dem Verlust von Familienwerten. Es ist ein Versuch die Bedeutung von Familie in der sich verändernden Wirklichkeit der Moderne umzudefinieren.
The film explores feelings about individuality and the loss of family values. An attempt to redefine the meaning of family in the changing realm of modernity.

A very boring conversation

Die Unterhaltung beginnt mit Bemerkungen über Musik und E-mails. Dann entwickelt sie sich langsam in eine Richtung, die möglicherweise eine »Mutter-Sohn-Beziehung« in eine »Mann-Frau-Beziehung« verwandeln könnte.
The conversation starts from comments about music and e-mails, then slowly moves to illogical things that could possibly change a »mother-son relationship« into a »man-woman relationship«.

Trip to the Wound

Shilla trifft Carlo in einem Bus. Sie sammelt die Geschichten, die hinter Verletzungen stecken. Es ist eine Reise, die Carlo niemals vergessen wird.
One night, Shilla meets Carlo on a bus. Shilla is a collector; she collects stories behind wounds. It’s a trip Carlo will never forget.

Hulahoop Soundings

Ein erotisches Remake des Abschlussfilms von Joel Coen »Soundings« als Dreiergeschichte mit Telefonsex und einem Hulahoop-Reifen.
It is a story of a girl who hula-hoops to let customers of phone sex hear the noise. It is a remade film of a graduate work by Joel Coen in college.

Women who was Married by a Dog

The legend of Dajang Soembi, retold. Her son turns around to be a killer because he wants to be his own mother’s lover.
An absurdist folk tale, inventively told in the form of a silent movie.

Kara the Daughter of a Tree
Indonesia 2004, Edwin, 7 min, OmeU
Kara is a little girl living in an isolated place. Her father disappeared after Ronald killed her mother. A journalist’s invasion to her life made her decided to seek for Ronald for an ultimate answer.

Bio

Edwin (*1978) studierte Film am Jakarta Institute of Arts. Sein Film »Kara, Anak Sebatang Pohon« (2005) war der erste indonesische Kurzfilm, der in der Sektion Director`s Fortnight auf dem Cannes International Filmfestival 2005 gezeigt wurde. »Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly« ist sein Spielfilmdebüt, der auf dem Asian Hot Shots Berlin Premiere hatte. »Postcards From The Zoo« läuft im Wettbewerb der diesjährigen Berlinale.

Edwin (*1978) studied film at the Jakarta Institute of Arts. His short film »Kara, Anak Sebatang Pohon« (2005) became the first Indonesian short film screened at the Director’s Fortnight, Cannes International Film Festival 2005. »Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly« is his debut feature, that premiered at Asian Hot Shots Berlin. »Postcards From The Zoo« is in Competition at this year‘s Berlinale.
